China will accelerate efforts to achieve greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology in 2026, according to a draft government work report submitted on March 5, 2026 to the country's top legislature for deliberation.

The report emphasized the importance of boosting innovation capacity and providing the scientific and technological foundation necessary for the country's high-quality development. China seeks full integration between technological and industrial innovation, including developing Beijing, Shanghai, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into international centers for scientific and technological innovation. The report also highlights the role of enterprises in innovation and supports leading high-tech companies in forming innovation consortia and undertaking major national projects.
